As part of Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism, a nightly levy of $100 per person applies to all international travelers since, 2021 with exceptions for Indian nationals (charged ₹1200 per person per night) and Bangladeshi citizens (charged $15 per person per night).

The flight into Paro is considered one of the most beautiful in the world — offering spectacular views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Bhutan’s sacred peaks like Jomolhari and Jichu Drake before landing in the lush Paro valley.

By Air

The easiest and most popular way to enter Bhutan is by air.
Bhutan’s only international airport is located in Paro, about an hour’s drive from the capital city, Thimphu.

By Road

Tourists can also enter Bhutan via land routes from India. The main entry and exit points are well connected to Indian towns by good road networks.

Entry Points:

  1. Phuentsholing (South-West Bhutan) – Border town adjacent to Jaigaon, West Bengal. This is the most commonly used route for travelers coming from Bagdogra, Siliguri, or Kolkata.
  2. Gelephu (South-Central Bhutan) – Entry from Assam, offering access to central Bhutan.
  3. Samdrup Jongkhar (South-East Bhutan) – Entry from Guwahati (Assam), suitable for those visiting eastern Bhutan.

Regular flights connect Bhutan with several major cities such as:

Visa and Entry Formalities

All international tourists must obtain a Bhutan visa before arrival, which is arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator like HimaXplore Travels.

  • Visa is approved by the Tourism Department upon payment of the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and tour booking confirmation.
  • Indian and Bangladeshi nationals can obtain entry permits on arrival at the border or Paro airport with a valid passport or voter ID.
